General Prosecutor’s Office – Defense side of Nika Melia created its own version of video material
A special briefing was held at General Prosecutor’s Office regarding pieces of evidence gathered into the case of Nika Melia, one of the leaders of National Movement Party in connection with June 20-21 developments outside the parliament building in Tbilisi.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the defense side of Nika Melia created its own version of the video material and provided the public with a different interpretation of the events.
The Prosecutor’s Office says that Nika Melia was trying to give peaceful character to the attempt of intrusion into the parliament building and acting in pretending to be ready for negotiations.
The Prosecutor’s Office said it had analyzed the full material chronologically and claimed that Melia tried to camouflage his real intention and misused the trust of his supporters under the emotional background of the crowd gathered to express the legitimate protest.
The Prosecutor’s Office determined that Melia was the leader of group violence and said that intensive investigation still continues. About 80 people have been questioned for the time being and probing also keeps on into facts of possible exceed of force on part of law enforcers that night.
The protest rally of the so-called Gavrilov Night was dispersed by the riot police with the use of tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon. About 240 people both civilians and law-enforcers were injured during the night of June 20-21.
