GD Chair ready to resolve misunderstandings with strategic partners through closed-door discussion
“We value the relations with our main strategic partner, the US. Our sincere wish is to discuss and resolve misunderstandings, if any, behind closed doors,” said Irakli Garibashvili, Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party.
Reporters asked the GD Chair to remark on the letter of 14 US Senators addressed to Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze saying if the bill On Transparency of Foreign Influence is passed, “they would be compelled to encourage a shift in U.S. policy toward Georgia.”
“The context and pathos of the letter are dictated by the incorrect perceptions. It is necessary to continue dialogue, communication with our friends, our partners to persuade our American and European friends that Georgia does not do anything unusual,” he said.
According to Garibashvili, the criticism that Georgia plans to derail its European integration path is groundless.
“This statement is devoid of grounds. Georgia’s foreign policy vector is guaranteed on the Constitution level. This passage was added by the Georgian government, our team. Therefore, speculation that the Georgian government shifted its foreign policy vector is ruled out.
I would add that it is natural and possible to have certain disagreements in opinions and diverse assessments, but it is important to approximate the viewpoints, hold a dialogue, keep communication and ensure more involvement to resolve misunderstandings and lift the vagueness that exists in society,” said Irakli Garibashvili.
