GD Chair: Decision on candidate status to be political, involving high risks
Irakli Kobakhidze, the parliamentary majority leader and chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said that Georgia has no 50/50 chance of getting the EU candidate status.
Kobakhidze highlighted that the decision lies with 27 countries, and if just one of them rejects it, Georgia will not be granted candidate status.
“We remain hopeful to obtain candidate status. However, I reiterate the chances are 50/50 because of the political nature of the decision-making process. A single refusal from any of the 27 countries is enough for rejection for candidate status. Therefore, it is concerning how easily the decisions of the EU can be manipulated by a certain ‘global war party’. Consequently, the risks remain high.
Nevertheless, if we can demonstrate to this ‘global war party’ the unity and strength within our country, both from the government and the public, our chances of obtaining status will increase. Ultimately, I hope we will be granted candidate status by December,” stated Kobakhidze.
