GD Chair: At a time when country ready for EU membership, new Transparency law can be adopted
“At the time when the country is ready and we are told that it can become a member of the European Union the following day, we can simply annul, modify or adopt a new law,” said Irakli Garibashvili, Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party in Gori speaking about the bill On Transparency of Foreign Influence.
Irakli Garibashvili believes that Georgia is not ready for EU membership at present.
“The speculation is that by adopting the Transparency law, something may change or can be a stumbling barrier. The country reached the maximum, the peak was last December when we received the EU candidate country status. The next stage is membership. However, today our country is not ready for EU membership. There is no consensus about Georgia’s joining the EU today especially when there are many problems and this would take time.
The European Union is not ready for enlargement and our next steps depend on many factors. To tell you simply, at the time when the country is ready and they tell us that Georgia will become a member of the EU, we can simply annul, revise or adopt a new law, So, do not worry, everything is OK,” he said.
