“What we are seeing now is an attempt to discredit the peaceful public protest. Violence is unacceptable,” the party Gakharia for Georgia has issued a statement.
The party urged citizens to refrain from participating in radical or destructive provocations.
“We call on the citizens of Georgia not to engage in radical and destructive provocations. Escalating these events into uncontrolled processes serves only the interests of the enemies of the Georgian state,” the statement reads.
Tensions escalated outside the Atoneli Presidential Palace in Tbilisi, where protesters broke into the premises. Special Task Force officers were deployed to the scene. Demonstrators threw stones and various objects at law enforcement officers. The police used water cannons.
