Gakharia for Georgia proposes new commission to study minimum wage in Georgia

Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party, criticized the Georgian Dream for failing to support his team’s initiative to set a minimum wage, saying the decision condemns Georgian citizens to poverty and social inequality.

According to Sharashidze, the Georgian Dream argued that the draft law had not been sufficiently studied. In response, the Gakharia for Georgia party is preparing a proposal to create a temporary parliamentary commission to study the minimum wage.

“As you know, yesterday we submitted our legislative initiative to the Parliament, which proposes that the minimum wage in Georgia should exceed 1,050 GEL. A Georgian citizen should not be treated as cheap labor. No one should be forced to accept a low wage simply because they have no alternative,” Sharashidze said.

He added that the discussion of the initiative in parliament was met with irritation and exclamations from Georgian Dream members, effectively dooming citizens to poverty and inequality.

“The main argument of Georgian Dream was that the draft law lacked sufficient study and discussion. That is why our party is proposing a temporary commission to examine the minimum wage, taking into account inflation, current prices, and the economic situation. We call on Georgian Dream to support this commission,” Sharashidze said.

He warned that failure to support the commission would reveal Georgian Dream’s lack of genuine interest in improving the social conditions of citizens, prioritizing only economic gains for themselves.

“Our political force, Gakharia for Georgia, promises that we will continue to fight for a decent standard of living, fair salaries, and pensions. If the current administration prevents progress, after the 2028 elections, we will establish a legally mandated salary floor to ensure citizens can earn a decent living through their labor,” Sharashidze concluded.
