Former GD members speak out against People's Power's bills

The former members of the Georgian Dream released a statement on the People’s Power-tabled bills regarding the so-called foreign agents, urging Parliament to halt consideration of the proposed legislation immediately.

The former members of the ruling party believe the issue transcends any group’s political interests and directly affects Georgia’s future.

“Not only the adoption, but even the consideration of these bills will cause irreparable harm to our country’s European integration process, particularly when the country is awaiting candidate status.

This initiative violates core democratic values by demonizing friendly and partner countries, as well as Georgian civil society and portraying them as hostile forces, which is totally unacceptable.

The world has previously witnessed similar outcomes in the case of Russia. In light of friendly countries’ refusal to adopt the initiative and their negative attitudes toward it, it is especially detrimental to discuss these proposed legislations.

Along with the negative social impact and irreversible harm to the country’s foreign reputation, the discussion of the proposed legislation undermines the country’s ongoing political process, produces an unnecessary stir in Georgian society, and deepens the controversy,” the statement posted on Facebook by Tamar Chugoshvili reads.

The signatories called on the Georgian Parliament to immediately halt the consideration of draft laws and begin implementing the reforms required for Georgia to become an EU candidate through an open and inclusive process.
