Chairman of the parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee Nikoloz Samkharadze said that there is no political persecution in the country, nor are there any political prisoners; anyone serving a sentence has been convicted under a specific legal provision.

“There is no political persecution and no political prisoners in the country. It is very hard for the team that the former prime minister is charged with corruption. It is a tragedy that high-ranking officials are charged for serious crimes.

However, the team’s strength is also demonstrated by the fact that it can admit and say that Yes, we are guilty, but we do our best to ensure such things do not happen again in the future,” Samkharadze told the GPB’s First Channel.

The Prosecutor’s Office brought new charges against Irakli Gharibashvili for taking a bribe of an especially large amount on August 24.
