Foreign national arrested in Tbilisi for GEL 28,000 fraud

Officers of the Fraud-Fighting Division of the Tbilisi Police Department’s Main Division of Investigations and the Main Division of Detectives have arrested a foreign national on charges of fraudulently obtaining a large amount of money, Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said.

According to the ministry, a comprehensive investigation established that the suspect allegedly promised the director of a company to import metal composite panels from abroad, intending to obtain a large amount of money through deception.

The suspect allegedly persuaded the company director to transfer nearly GEL 28,000, but failed to fulfill the promise and unlawfully appropriated the money, the ministry said.

Following operational and investigative measures, law enforcement officers arrested the suspect in Tbilisi based on a court ruling.

The investigation is being conducted under Article 180, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which carries a prison sentence of up to nine years, according to the ministry.
