For Georgia's Sharashidze: US and EU will clarify their own interests; Georgia must focus on national priorities

“The United States and the European Union will clarify their respective interests and claims independently, while Georgia must focus on its own priorities,” said Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party.

According to Sharashidze, U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about Europe have no connection to Georgia’s aspiration to become a member of the European Union.

“This is about defining new contours of power distribution in the modern world. Georgia has nothing to do with this. We must not allow this topic to be used so that Georgian Dream once again exploits Trump’s statement and portrays the European Union—our ultimate goal—and European countries, our strategic partners, as enemies,” Sharashidze said.

Sharashidze stressed that Georgia’s main concern should be its own responsibilities and challenges, particularly ensuring that European democracy exists in the country once and for all.

“Trump, the United States, and the European Union will, in one way or another, clarify their own interests and claims with each other,” he added.

U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, stated: “I love Europe, and I want to see Europe do good, but it’s not heading in the right direction.”
