For Georgia’s Sharashidze: Georgian public disdains photo-ops and canned letters; we need real action from GD

Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the Gakharia For Georgia party, has stated that Georgian Dream is weaponising a standard, boilerplate protocol letter for internal propaganda to spin a narrative that relations with the United States are being “reset”.

According to Sharashidze, this spin only highlights how desperate a position Georgian Dream finds itself in, revealing its total inability to take genuine steps towards repairing international ties.

“Every single nation that congratulates the United States on its Independence Day receives these identical, boilerplate protocol letters. The real issue here is that Georgian Dream and Irakli Kobakhidze are reduced to exploiting this for domestic consumption, trying to pass it off as a ‘reset’ in relations with the US. The fact that Georgian Dream and its propaganda machine feel compelled to resort to this is the core of the problem.

If Georgian Dream truly wants to demonstrate to the Georgian public real, substantive steps towards repairing and improving ties with the United States, the European Union, and the wider democratic Western world, then they must be the ones to make meaningful concessions. They must overhaul their anti-democratic behaviour, reject violence and autocracy, and realign themselves with the values and commitments they have undertaken, particularly regarding the European Union.

As things stand, Georgian Dream has made a laughing stock of itself. I cannot think of another country that would leverage a standard form letter for political agitation and propaganda. The fact that Georgian Dream needs this shows how wretched their position is, and how incapable they are of taking authentic action. They want to pass off these protocol pleasantries, form letters, photo-ops, and handshakes, of which we have seen countless before, as some monumental breakthrough.

Meanwhile, the Georgian public has no interest in staged photo-ops or canned letters, regardless of who sends them or how deeply we all respect the President of the United States. What matters here is concrete action. Yet, far from seeing any real action from Georgian Dream, we are unfortunately witnessing the exact opposite daily,” Sharashidze remarked.

For context, US President Donald Trump sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, thanking him for his congratulations on the 250th Independence Day of the United States of America. In the letter, Trump noted: “I look forward to strengthening our cooperation as we advance together toward a more secure, prosperous, and peaceful future.”
