FMs of Estonia, Iceland, Lithuania address protesters at Rustaveli avenue
The Foreign Ministers of Estonia, Iceland, and Lithuania on Wednesday addressed the protesters against the ‘draft law on transparency of foreign influence’ in downtown Tbilisi.
Icelandic Foreign Minister Thórdís Kolbrún R. Gylfadóttir told the demonstrators, “We stand with you; you are not alone, and we have made this journey out of respect for Georgia and the people.”
“I’m here to say that the values of freedom, human rights, democracy, and the rule of law are not a price of admission into the Euro-Atlantic community, but a very real foundation to increase prosperity and peace and that in Iceland, we know very well,” Icelandic Foreign Minister noted.
In his address, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said, “We must all speak openly about what the current policies would mean for Georgia’s European future before it is too late.”
“During the Rose Revolution of 2003, the Baltic States stood with you. Just five months later, we made it to NATO and then to the EU, and many of us believe Georgia could quickly move along this path as well,” Gabrielius Landsbergis stated.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna noted that “every nation has the right to decide where they belong, what values they are sharing and what kind of values they are standing for.”
“And I know all together with you, Georgian people, we are sharing the same values about democracy and freedom,” Margus Tsahkna asserted.
