FM Zalkaliani believes ultimatums unacceptable, political parties to come out of a deadlock

“Ultimatums are unacceptable. Political parties must conclude that the process must come out of a deadlock,” said Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani regarding the negotiations between the political parties over the 2020 October parliamentary elections.

“All our strategic partners, including the United States, want the process to end as quickly as possible. There is a political will for this in the Georgian government as well, and it is necessary to find a solution, a quick solution. This process cannot last long, given the threats and challenges we face today. We agree on this, and I think there will be an opportunity to stabilize the situation and find an appropriate agreement between the main political parties shortly.

Ultimatums are unthinkable, unacceptable. Certain radical groups should not keep the whole process taken hostage. Political parties that are rational and realize the severity of the geopolitical picture should come to this conclusion. I think that will happen soon to get the process out of this deadlock artificially created by certain radical groups. We need to reach an agreement because we need internal consolidation to deal with immediate threats as never before,” said David Zalkaliani.

Georgian opposition parties that won seats in the Georgian Parliament of the 10th Convocation believe the 2020 parliamentary elections were a fraud. They have been demanding repeat parliamentary elections and the release of the United National Movement Chair, Nika Melia, and the co-founder of the TV channel Mtavari Arkhi Giorgi Rurua.

The second EU-mediated attempt to solve political crises in Georgia failed earlier this week. EU mediator Christian Danielsson said he proposed a solution that puts the country’s interest first to the parties, but none of the political actors agreed on the solution.
