FM Szijjarto: Hungary as EC president to spare no effort to launch Georgia's EU accession talks

“Hungary will make efforts to start the membership negotiations with Georgia during the EU Council presidency,” said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto following his meeting with Georgian colleague Ilia Darchiashvili, in Budapest.

Hungarian FM believes “EU enlargement is one of the most effective ways to enhance the European Union.”

“One of the purposes of the [Georgian] minister’s visit is to prepare for Hungary’s six-month chairmanship of the EU Council.

At a time when the European Union is struggling, it is our responsibility to strengthen it, and one of the finest weapons for doing so is EU enlargement,” he remarked.

The Hungarian Minister added that “Georgia’s accession to the European Union will benefit both sides significantly.”
