FM: Linking Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence with EU integration wrong approach
“Linking the Law on Transparency [of Foreign Influence] with European integration is a wrong approach and it should not be a subject of discussion,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili remarked on the EU Ambassador to Georgia’s statement.
According to Darchiashvili, “The prerequisite for opening negotiations for joining the European Union should be the fulfilment of the EU recommendations.”
“I have not heard the statement of the EU ambassador, but I believe that connecting this law with the opening of negotiations is not the right approach.
Our further integration into the European Union depends on the reform agenda that we have agreed upon. We follow this process, we take responsibility for all the commitments we have made and we will fulfill them, which must be the main condition for Georgia to move to the next phase.
Transparency is the main cornerstone of Georgia’s European integration. Everyone is obliged to be accountable to the Georgian people. This law should not and cannot hinder European integration,” Darchiashvili added.
