Heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding in the eastern Georgian town of Telavi late overnight after the Telavi Khevi River overflowed, causing widespread damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure.

The torrent could not pass beneath a bridge in the lower part of the town. As the river, carrying large amounts of rocks and debris, burst from its channel, it flooded Kavkasioni and Alazani streets.

The flooding inundated the basements of residential buildings, as well as shops, pharmacies and all nearby public and commercial facilities.

The affected area has been left without electricity, natural gas and drinking water. Local residents say the basements of apartment buildings remain flooded, while several vehicles have also been damaged.

Emergency services and specialized equipment have been deployed since early morning, and clean-up operations are underway.

According to the Governor of Kakheti, the damage caused by the disaster is extensive. An emergency headquarters has been established to coordinate response and recovery efforts.
