Federica Mogherini: EU will revise five guiding principles for EU-Russia relations
The EU will revise five guiding principles for EU-Russia relations, – Federica Mogherini, European Union’s high representative for foreign affairs and Security Policy made the regarding statement prior to the meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers in Luxembourg.
“We will also negotiate with Russia, in particular, will revise five main principles of our relationship with Russia. I’ll tell you more about it by the end of the day, ” – said Federica Mogherini.
Five guiding principles for EU-Russia relations were adopted in March 2016. These principles are: full implementation of the Minsk agreements; closer ties with Russia’s former Soviet neighbours; strengthening EU resilience to Russian threats; selective engagement with Russia on certain issues such as counter-terrorism; and support for people-to-people contacts.
According to the EU High Representative, it is important to renew the political negotiations with the United Nations on the settlement of the Syrian crisis.
As Mogherini said, a conference on Syria issue will be held next week in Brussels, where 70 delegations will participate.
“Syria will be the main issue of discussions today. The EU Council will adopt a summarizing statement. We will confirm a joint position that I have published on behalf of 28 members, on the issue of use of chemical weapons and response. We will work in Brussels next week to prepare for the scheduled conference”, – Federica Mogherini said.
