EU’s straying from founding principles and facing ‘civilizational abyss’, says MP Archil Gorduladze

“When you are left with nothing but obligations and stripped of all rights, your statehood is effectively reduced to zero. We must ask ourselves: was the European Union built on such principles, or was it founded on equality?” stated MP Archil Gorduladze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Legal Issues Committee.

According to Gorduladze, the European Union is abandoning its own founding principles.

“We can ask the collective United National Movement a simple question: is it not a total erasure of a country’s sovereignty when we are told that new members will be admitted to the Union, but will only have obligations and won’t even be allowed a say? Let them answer this simple question before moving on to their rhetoric.

Naturally, having only obligations and no rights means your statehood is reduced to zero. Let us ask: was the European Union created for this, and is it built on such principles? Or was it founded on equality, so that small countries could speak as equals with nations of vast economies and massive military potential? This is exactly what the EU was supposed to be created for. Yet, time and again, it strays from its founding principles at every turn, proving once more that it is on the brink of a civilizational abyss,” Gorduladze said.
