EU's Borrell emphasizes enlargement as most crucial foreign policy, stresses importance of right decisions
Josep Borrell, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, says that enlargement is the most important foreign policy mechanism of the European Union.
“Enlargement is the most important foreign policy. It’s the stronger stability capacity that we have not only with Ukraine but also with other candidates in the Balkans and in the Caucasus. So it’s very much important to take the right decisions. I hope, I will get guidance in order to continue developing European peace facility, military support that member states have been discussing. We went to Kyev. We were with Ukrainians. Now it’s time to get political guidance from the European Union Council leaders,” Josep Borrell remarked ahead of the European Council’s meeting.
The European Council meets in Brussels on December 14-15 to discuss the enlargement package, which involves ten countries. Among the key considerations are granting Georgia the status of a candidate for EU membership, initiating membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, and the EU perspective of the Western Balkans.
