European Integration Committee Chair: Circus staged by Joe Wilson Commission is of little interest to us

“The circus staged by the Joe Wilson Commission is of little interest to us. Most likely, it will feature people who directly promoted revolutionary scenarios in Georgia, deepening public discord and anxiety. These are not individuals genuinely concerned about Georgia’s future or capable of contributing meaningfully to discussions about the country,” said the Chairman of Georgia’s European Integration Committee, Levan Makhashvili, speaking about the Helsinki Commission’s upcoming session.

He also commented on the Helsinki Commission’s statement, claiming, “Georgia was once a core U.S. partner and a beacon of freedom in the Caucasus. Today, the ruling Georgian Dream party is dragging the country back into Russia’s orbit and deepening their relationship with China and other U.S. adversaries.”

Makhashvili rejected these claims, describing them as politically motivated.

“It is no one’s business, especially not Joe Wilson’s, what steps Georgia takes or with whom it cooperates. The Georgian government acts in the country’s best interest—to maintain peace, restore territorial integrity, and strengthen the economy. Anyone opposing this is effectively opposing our national priorities,” he said.

He added, “We will focus on fulfilling our two main national goals—restoring territorial integrity and bolstering economic strength—regardless of external criticism.”

The Helsinki Commission is scheduled to hold its hearing on Georgia on September 10.
