EU Integration Committee Chair hopes Trump won’t sign MEGOBARI Act, defeats deep state
“The so-called MEGOBARI Act is everything except friendship. It contradicts both the interests of Georgia’s population and the vision of the new U.S. administration regarding Georgia and the region,” stated Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the European Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament.
According to Makhashvili, theoretically, if this act comes into force, it will significantly damage bilateral relations, and this is precisely the calculation of those informal forces and influences that, through inertia, still managed to push the document through the lower chamber.
“In the end, there are several stages left before it fully enters into force, but we hope that the President will not sign this provocative resolution, thereby fulfilling his promise to defeat the ‘Deep State’ in the United States. This hope stems from the stance the new U.S. administration has taken, as conveyed through both formal and informal communications. We have no illusion that everything might happen exactly as the American President stated because we see these informal forces that possess certain power and, driven by financial or other interests, manage to make these types of decisions. Ultimately, we still hope that he will be able to defeat the informal influences and the ‘Deep State’ and lead the country, taking into account American interests.
At this time, as of May 6, this act means nothing, as it has no legal force whatsoever. Even if we theoretically assume that it enters into force and Trump signs it, even in this case, as the executive branch, the new administration and Trump will have the right to manoeuvre – to decide for themselves whether to implement certain parts of it, implement it fully, or not implement it at all. If the new administration wants to take any steps, it doesn’t necessarily need this specific act of Congress. Just as in the case of a Congressional act, it’s only a mandate that they may or may not implement,” Levan Makhashvili stated.
For information, the U.S. House of Representatives has passed the MEGOBARI Act.
