EU Commissioner Varhelyi believes democracy must prevail

“We believe that democracy must prevail. Both sides need to engage in a constructive dialogue that is leading us to a solution that is in line with the constitution and democratic principles,” Olivér Varhelyi, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, declared during the press conference following the EU-Georgia Association Council on Tuesday in Brussels.

The European Commissioner echoed the developments in Georgia following the 2020 parliamentary elections.

“We touched the developments in Georgia since the parliamentary elections last autumn. I would conclude in one sentence on that. We believe that democracy must prevail and that both sides need to engage in a constructive dialogue that is leading us to a solution that is in line with the constitution and democratic principles,” Olivér Varhelyi stated.

The sixth meeting of the Georgia-EU Association Council has been held on Tuesday in Brussels, Belgium. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili and his governmental delegation participated in the session. Georgian PM, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borell, and the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, gave a joint press conference after the sitting.
