EU Ambassador: Transparency Law serious obstacle on Georgia's EU integration path
EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, on Thursday, said the ‘draft law on the transparency of foreign influence’ as it stands now “is a serious obstacle on the way of Georgia’s EU integration.”
The Ambassador expressed hope that “parliamentary procedures will be found in order not to have this law in its current form being adopted.”
“We sincerely hope that a way will be found to either withdraw or to seriously change this law. We all know that the Venice Commission has been asked to provide its legal opinion; we are waiting for this legal opinion to be published very soon and I sincerely hope that parliamentary procedures will be found in order not to have this law in its current form being adopted.
When it comes to possible negative developments, I am really sorry you are even asking me this question. We are here to make sure that Georgia is successful, and succeeds on its way to EU membership as is the will of the vast majority of Georgians; so, for the moment, let’s hope that this law will not be passed.
In case the law is passed, my leaders in Brussels together with 27 member states will have to react and I sincerely hope that we will not move to that stage, to the spiral of the negative events. I do not want Georgian people to be punished.” Paweł Herczyński told media pool.
