EU Ambassador to Georgia – We already see signs of increase of polarization
I said yesterday that voting held the parliament over constitutional would create risks for the increase of polarization. We already see signs of that – Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia Carl Hartzell said at the central office of Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia Party.
“I see a clear risk that going back on this commitment at this stage would be seen as breaking the trust among the political parties, the trust with wider segments of the population, and to again increase the polarisation in the run-up to the 2020 elections. I hope the parliament will take this into account in their vote later today,” Hartzell said on November 14.
Hartzell held a meeting with Chairman of Parliament Archil Talakvadze. Bidzina Ivanishvili, Chairman of Georgian Dream Party and majority MP Irakli Kobakhidze are also present in the office.
According to the EU Ambassador, the outcome of the voting was regrettable but finding a way out was important. He said he also planned to hold discussions with oppositional politicians.
The constitutional changes prepared by the parliamentary majority regarding transformation onto the proportional system of elections were turned down in the parliament on November 14. Some majority MPs left their parliamentary seats and posts. The oppositional parties and Georgian public representatives turned to the street in protest.
