EU Ambassador says: For the moment no agreement or unanimity on sanctions imposition
“One of the possible measures is sanctions, but for the moment, there is no agreement, even no unanimity, about introducing any respective measures towards anyone in Georgia,” said EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski.
According to the Ambassador, the EU will monitor the situation very closely.
“In response to developments in Georgia, the EU leaders decided to put Georgia’s EU accession process on hold. The EU leaders also decided to limit direct financial support to the government and to focus more on the support of civil society and the media. The first unfortunate victim is our support to the Georgian Defense forces, as I have just told you, the European Peace Facility assistance for 30 million that was planned to help the Georgian Defense Forces has been just put on hold, the other possible measures that we have developed, we will be monitoring the situation very closely.
One of the possible measures is sanctions, but for the moment, there is no agreement, even no unanimity, about introducing any respective measures towards anyone in Georgia. Such a possibility exists in the future but for the moment, this is not the case,” he said.
EU has frozen its support for Georgia from the European Peace Facility – EURO 30 million for 2024.
