EU Ambassador: If current trajectory continues, positive recommendation on Georgia's accession unlikely
“In the current situation, if the current trajectory continues, I think it’s highly unlikely that there will be a positive recommendation from the European Commission regarding the opening of accession negotiations for Georgia” stated Paweł Herczyński, the Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia.
He noted that Georgia is currently in the midst of elections, which have overshadowed other important matters. “Based on the decision of the 27 member states, Georgia’s EU integration path has been stopped. We are awaiting clarification from the ruling majority about their true intentions, as stated in the European Council’s June conclusion.”
Herchinski expressed hope that after the elections, regardless of the outcome, a new government will emerge that is genuinely committed to bringing Georgia closer to the EU. “We need to catch up; we have wasted so much time, the whole year. Instead of the necessary reforms, we had unfortunate events that have raised our concerns. This has led to stopping Georgia’s EU accession process, while Ukraine and Moldova have accelerated their accession process.”
He emphasized that the distance between Georgia and the EU has increased, but expressed optimism that this could change after the elections. “The EU is ready to help and support any government that will be formed,” he concluded.
