EU Ambassador hopes draft law on foreign agents not be translated into law
EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski on Monday said the EU treats Georgia as “a close partner.”
Alluding to the draft law of foreign agents, tabled by People’s Power movement, the Ambassador noted that “this initiative goes against at least two of the 12 priorities.”
Herczynski hopes “this initiative will not be translated into law.”
“It is essential for me as EU ambassador to have access to the key decision-makers in Georgia. And to make sure that we discuss all the issues of concern in a very open and sincere way.
When it comes to the law of foreign agents, the so-called law on foreign agents, you have probably seen the spokesperson of the HR/VP statement that was issued during the weekend. I already spoke about it. This is the wrong message. Wrong timing. This initiative goes against at least two of the 12 priorities – the priority on civil society and the priority on the freedom of media. I also understand that this is only an initiative that has not yet been properly discussed.
So, there is time, and I sincerely hope that this initiative will not be translated into law. My superiors from Brussels have already expressed their view. And it’s a crystal clear view. This possible law would be against the norms and principles of the European Union,” he told media outlets.
