EU Ambassador believes it's never late to sign up for democratic reforms
“Never too late to sign up to what is an important roadmap for democratic reforms,” said EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell as a remark about signing the April 19 Agreement by the largest opposition United National Movement (UNM) party.
“As you know, today, the UNM party Chairman signed the April 19 Agreement, mediated by the European Union. He did this on behalf of his party, including all UNM parliamentarians and without reservations. This means now that 147 out of 150 elected Members of the Georgian Parliament have, at one stage or another, supported this agreement and all of its contents. Of course, at different times. But I believe it is never too late to sign up to what is, essentially, an important roadmap for democratic reforms. And arguably, it is not too late either to recommit to it.
It is my conviction that these reforms are, after all, for the benefit of all Georgian citizens. For this reason, the European Union believes that the full implementation of all reforms set out in this agreement is in Georgia’s national interest. We will remain ready to work with everyone who is committed to their realization,” EU Ambassador said.
The opposition United National Movement (UNM) party signed the EU-brokered deal on September 1.
The European Council President Charles Michel mediated the April 19 Agreement among Georgian parties to end the political crisis in Georgia.
The ruling Georgian Dream party announced the EU-brokered April 19 Agreement as annulled on July 28. The GD Chair Irakli Kobakhidze said 100 days after signing the document, it fulfilled its mission and exhausted itself.
