Estonian FM: Do not lose hope, Europe will remain open for Georgia

My message to the Georgian people who want the European path is: do not lose hope and act accordingly, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna told journalists in Luxembourg ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

According to him, Europe will remain open to Georgia.

“I am very sorry that the Georgian regime is taking the totally wrong way, not towards the European Union. My message is to the Georgian people who really would like to have this course, do not lose hope. Armenian experience shows that if the people want, finally, there can be democratic elections and the European path can be opened. So, do not lose hope, because Europe will remain open for Georgia,” Margus Tsahkna said.

Asked whether, following Hungary’s veto being lifted, sanctions against Georgian Dream are being considered, Tsahkna replied:

“Yes, we are going to discuss sanctions against Georgia, as well as against some people. Estonia has presented a long list of people on the national sanctions. We hope that this pressure will work, but it is not for the EU to decide what the Georgian people are going to do; it is up to them. We Estonians understand that the situation is difficult,” he added.
