Giga Gigashvili, the chief of Tbilisi City Hall’s Environmental Protection Department, resigned on Wednesday, claiming “my deputy is in jail over tragedy [at Vake Park]. As the head of the Environmental Protection Service, I hold moral responsibility for my deputy’s activities.”
He promised to completely cooperate with the inquiry to find the truth.
Since 2017, Giga Gigashvili has led the Department.
Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze also vowed to “fully answer the law if even the slightest guilt of mine is revealed.”
Three minors were electrocuted on October 13 while attempting to recover a ball that had fallen into the newly-renovated Vake Park fountain. One died, while the other two survived.
