ECHR ruling to be unexpected for ex-President's mother

We didn’t get the Strasbourg judgement we expected, said Giuli Alasania, the mother of Georgia’s jailed ex-President, Mikheil Saakashvili, at a briefing on Friday.

Giuli Alasania pointed out that attorneys and members of Mikhail Saakashvili’s family are now in the second round of the litigation, which is the consideration of the claim.

Alasania stressed that “many doctors have confirmed that Mikheil Saakashvili is critically ill and needs immediate medical care.” She hoped the decision, which many people have been waiting for, would finally be made.

“Mikhail Saakashvili is imprisoned on fabricated charges; he does not know what he is jailed for; he is jailed for refusing to give up his country to Putin. We hope justice prevails in the end. We have not got the decision today we expected,” Giuli Alasania stated.

Georgian Justice Minister announced today that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rejected Mikheil Saakashvili’s lawyers’ appeal and did not oblige the state to transfer the jailed ex-President for treatment.
