EC Spokesperson: Meeting aims to remedy circumstances behind suspension of visa-free for Georgian diplomatic passport holders
Today, a meeting will take place between the European Commission and a delegation of Georgian officials. This is part of the standard process set out in the visa regulations, which takes place when the visa suspension mechanism is activated, said European Commission Spokesperson Markus Lammert.
As Lammert noted, the meeting follows the decision taken in March 2026, namely the suspension of visa-free travel for Georgian citizens holding diplomatic service and official passports.
“Visa-free travel for them was initially suspended for a period of 12 months after the EU member states had approved these measures. So, the aim of this meeting is to remedy the circumstances that led to the suspension. So this is what is going to be talked about. These circumstances that have led to the suspension is Georgia’s violation of the commitments taken under its visa-free regime in key areas of democracy and fundamental rights,” the EC’s Spokesperson said.
