Draft of Public Defender election procedure amended

Georgian Parliament members amended the draft of the procedures for electing the Public Defender at the Procedural Issues Committee meeting on Thursday.

MPs clarify that rules and procedures instead of an order of Parliament Speaker will regulate several issues. The Chair of the Human Rights Committee, Mikheil Sarjveladze, said that based on changes, the working group, which evaluates the candidates, would not be able to disqualify anyone because of qualitative indicators.

“However, the application will not be considered if it contradicts the law. In particular, the law disallows the same candidate’s nomination twice in a row; the candidate must be a citizen of Georgia and no incumbent Public Defender,” Sarjveladze said.

He added that the authorized actors should select candidates for nomination only from the list evaluated by the civil sector. The working group should comprise 9 people.
