DoS Europe and Eurasia: Assistant Secretary Donfried spoke with Georgian FM, reiterated steadfast U.S. support for Georgia’s territorial integrity

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Karen Donfried, and Georgian Vice Prime Minister, Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani held a phone conversation on Friday.

The Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs (EUR) of the United States Department of State on Saturday said Assistant Secretary Donfried reiterated steadfast U.S. support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including its right to choose its security alliances.

Earlier FM Zalkaliani said Georgia is “grateful to our partners for the constant coordination we have about our region and European security on the background of important developments and current discussions with Russia.” The Minister stressed “there will be no decision about Georgia without Georgia.

Following a phone call with Karen Donfried, US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan said, “we will not negotiate about Europe, without Europe. We will not negotiate about NATO, without NATO, and we will not negotiate about Georgia, without Georgia.”

“Georgia knows Russia well from your long history of fighting to protect your independence. Georgia is a valued partner of NATO and the United States, and we will work together to respond to this crisis as we continue to build a Europe whole and free and at peace,” US Ambassador stated.
