Dir/Gen of ADB Sectoral Group: Tbilisi has fairly good situation in terms of urban mobility
The annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Tbilisi hosted a panel discussion on ‘Driving E-mobility in developing Asia and the Pacific’.
During the meeting, participants explored trends in green transport across the Asia-Pacific region, including ADB’s comprehensive approach to promoting electric mobility in key transport sectors.
Ramesh Subramaniam, Director General of ADB’s Sectoral Group, opened the discussion by emphasizing the positive state of urban mobility in Tbilisi compared to other developing countries. He acknowledged the challenges many countries face in the area of urban mobility and the need for fundamental changes.
“Transport connects citizens with services and educational institutions while contributing to economic development. However, it also accounts for around a quarter of global carbon emissions, which is a concerning statistic,” Subramaniam stated.
The ADB representative emphasized the importance of identifying critical needs and actions for transformation. Subramaniam noted that ADB is committed to supporting innovative initiatives to reduce carbon emissions.
“The ADB e-mobility program supports urban mobility development, especially public transport, in seven countries, including Georgia. We financed the ‘Green Cars’ project of ‘Tegeta’ in Georgia. Funding is essential to implement change, but it must be paired with policies that ensure its effective implementation,” Subramaniam said.
The 57th annual ADB meeting took place in Tbilisi from May 2-5, with approximately 4,000 participants from 68 countries. Attendees included representatives from international financial institutions, diplomats, the private sector, and government delegations.
