Design competition launched to transform disused historic mine in Chiatura into multifunctional museum

The Municipal Development Fund under the Ministry of Infrastructure has launched a design competition to construct an innovative, multifunctional museum complex on the grounds of the historic Tsereteli mine in Chiatura.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Infrastructure, the mine, which has been disused since the 1960s, will be redeveloped into a modern museum complex set to become a new hub for industrial tourism in the region.

“Under the proposed concept, particular emphasis will be placed on the safe adaptation of existing underground tunnels, where a realistic simulation of the ore extraction process and an interactive exhibition route will be set up for visitors. The design must incorporate above-ground exhibition and reception spaces, an information centre, catering facilities, a souvenir shop, and a visitor equipment area, as well as an educational amphitheatre for approximately 100 people and an adventure-recreational zone.

The museum is to integrate modern multimedia technologies, including holograms and 3D visualisations, offering visitors an entirely new way to experience this industrial heritage. High priority will be given during the design phase to energy efficiency and compliance with international safety standards. Delivering this multifunctional museum project at the historic mine will help preserve and promote Chiatura’s industrial heritage, bolster regional tourism and educational potential, and boost the local economy,” the official release stated.
