The Deputy Speaker of the Polish Sejm Malgorzata Gosiewska says that she was refused to visit jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili in hospital.

“I once again was refused to visit Michael Saakashvili despite the promise given to me by PM Garibashvili in the presence of PM Morawiecki,” Malgorzata Gosiewska told reporters near the Vivamed clinic on Friday.

As Deputy Speaker noted, this is the first time in Europe that the president has been imprisoned since World War II.

“Norms are violated not only with regard to President Saakashvili. The next president was deprived of protection and those privileges that belonged to him by law for completely unfounded reasons,” she said.

At the same time, Gosiewska spoke about Georgia’s European integration and noted that the opposition parties clearly express their readiness on granting Georgia the status of EU candidate, despite internal tensions in the country.

“I met with representatives of the opposition parties yesterday. They reaffirmed their clear position. I fully support this approach. I believe the country and the people should not be punished due to one oligarch’s domination, hatred and pro-Russian sentiments. Therefore, I fully support the statement of the European Parliament on the imposition of sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili,” she added.
