Deputy Interior Minister says police engage when rally turns violent
“The police engage in the processes when a rally turns violent, protesters artificially picket entrances of administrative buildings, and there is a risk of attack on individuals,” said Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze at the briefing.
According to Darakhvelidze, the police put every effort for 15-16 days to protect the protesters’ right to freedom of expression and peaceful manifestation.
“The only case when the police engage in the processes as defined by the legislation is when a rally turns violent, protesters artificially picket entrances of administrative buildings, and there is a high risk of attack on individuals.
The Special Task Force is deployed in extreme cases when control of the situation with police forces is impossible. They use special means and uniforms as defined by the law. As for questions, there is an independent investigation body which studies each activity, whether or not the use of force was proportional and if law enforcers exceeded their duties. It will be difficult for me to speak about these issues. Let us wait for the investigation,” he said.
