Defense Minister inspects situation in landslide-ravaged Shovi

Georgian Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze inspected the situation in the landslide-ravaged Shovi resort of the Oni Municipality together with the Head of the Defense Forces General-Mayor Giorgi Matiashvili.

National Guards with special equipment and the defence forces of the Western Command Third Brigade will join the rescue efforts from August 5.

They will also get involved in cleaning works of the disaster-hit Shovi resort and will help to install footbridges to pave the way for heavy vehicles.

Aviation has resumed work since morning.

Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Irakli Karseladze and Minister of Health Zurab Azrashvili also arrived at the disaster epicentre.

The death toll in the landslide-hit Shovi resort rose to eleven on August 4. Twenty-five people remain missing, while 210 were safely moved from the disaster zone.

A deadly landslide struck the resort on August 3.
