Debris traps being cleared in Vere River valley

Clearing operations are currently underway on the debris traps in the Vere River valley. Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, alongside his deputy, Irakli Bendeliani, inspected the process today, as Tbilisi City Hall reported.

“These works are carried out on a routine basis. Heavy rainfall in the capital frequently washes down construction materials, fallen trees, and other items, necessitating regular cleaning of the grates. The area will be completely cleared in about a week,” Kakha Kaladze stated.

According to Tbilisi City Hall, following the 2015 natural disaster, debris traps were installed at two locations in the Vere valley to safeguard residents and mitigate risks. Both sites are subject to systematic monitoring.

To prevent blockages, work is currently focused on clearing the debris trap along the road to Napetvrebi, ensuring the grate can freely handle high river volumes during heavy downpours.

Monitoring of the riverbed and water levels is also being conducted continuously. As soon as water levels recede, specialised heavy machinery is deployed to clear the site.

Alongside the Mayor, the inspection was attended by Giorgi Abutidze, Head of the Municipal Department for Infrastructure Development, and Beka Gelenava, Majoritarian MP for the Vake district.
