Death toll in landslide-hit Shovi rises to 21

The death toll in the landslide-ravaged Shovi resort of the Oni Municipality rose to 21, said Temur Mghebrishvili, Head of the Emergency Situations Management Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA).

According to Mghebrishvili, 12 people are still missing, and rescue efforts continue at 9 locations.

“We have already checked a large area. The situation is favourable. Through the riverbed, we try to flush the slush into the river to free up space. The temperature is high, and there is a danger of certain diseases. We have taken all measures. We try to keep everything within the protocol. We monitor the river bed across the 25-kilometre perimeter,” he said.

A deadly landslide struck the resort on August 3. Georgia observed a Day of Mourning on August 7.
