Cyprus Deputy Minister Raouna: Respect for fundamental rights is essential for enlargement progress, including for Georgia

Marilena Raouna, Deputy Minister for European Affairs of Cyprus, which currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, said it is important for Georgia to maintain its European perspective.

Raouna made the statement ahead of a meeting of the EU General Affairs Council.

“Enlargement is a core priority for the Cyprus presidency. There is momentum right now in enlargement that we need to deliver on as the European Union. The European Union delivers when our partners deliver. The rule of law, democratic standards, respect for fundamental rights and freedoms are the necessary prerequisites for our partners in order to have progress on the enlargement agenda. This is also what is expected in the case of Georgia. It is very important to keep the European perspective of the neighbourhood,” said Marilena Raouna.
