Court of Appeal upholds verdict in Saakashvili case

Court of Appeals has upheld the Tbilisi City Court’s ruling, according to which ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili was refused release from prison due to his poor health or the deterrent of his term.

The Court of Appeals saw no legal basis for satisfying the complaint submitted by Saakashvili’s lawyer and upheld the previous ruling.

“The appeals chamber considered the attorney’s motion without an oral hearing and determined that there was no legal basis for satisfying it after studying the materials presented in the case. Accordingly, the judgment of the Tbilisi City Court remained unchanged,” stated the Court of Appeal.

Tbilisi City Court denied ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili’s motion for his prison sentence postponement or release on February 6. Mikheil Saakashvili has been in jail for over a year, convicted of abuse of power while in office.
