Consider Saakashvili sentenced to death, if no stay of execution or release, ex-president's attorney says

Keeping Mikheil Saakashvili in prison will be a death verdict for the convict, said the former president’s attorney Shalva Khachapuridze.

According to the lawyer, Saakashvili’s case will be heard by Judge Giorgi Arevadze, who has earlier ruled the ex-president guilty.

“If Saakashvili’s sentence is not postponed or his release is not possible, his life is certainly in danger. Consider that a death sentence for him,” Khachapuridze said.

The lawyer went on to say that the judge’s independence would heavily influence the decision, even though the case is loaded with political implications.

On December 1, Mikheil Saakashvili’s attorneys petitioned the court to postpone the former president’s sentence. The ex-president is being treated at Tbilisi’s Vivamedi hospital.
