Conclusion of hydrologists, geologists on Shovi natural calamity to become known in 2 days

A preliminary conclusion of hydrologists and geologists from the National Environment Agency on the natural calamity in Shovi resort will become known in  two days.

Merab Gaprindashvili, the Agency’s Geology Department Head said that the specialists work activity in the disaster zone and will draw analysis about the reasons as well as on future forecast.

According to Gaprindashvili, such a large-scale disaster is not probable. “Six teams of specialists visually study the situation, they flew over the entire gorge. The geologists and hydrologists will examine satellite photos provided by foreign colleagues and all the materials will be deciphered,” he said.

The death toll in the landslide-hit Shovi resort rose from 11 to 16 on August 5. Twenty people remain missing, while 210 were safely moved from the disaster zone. Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili declared Monday, August 7, a Day of Mourning. A deadly landslide struck the resort on August 3.
