The Competition Commission selected candidates for the post of Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), Giorgi Kalandarishvili, and CEC members Maia Zaridze, Giorgi Sharabidze and Gia Tsatsanashvili.
The candidates will be submitted to the Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili for approval. The Competition Commission has heard the candidates’ visions.
The 9-member commission included representatives of non-governmental and academic circles and a representative of the Georgian president.
Two NGOs requested that the commission postpone discussions before the hearing of the bill on Transparency of Foreign Influence on April 15. The commission rebuffed the request. The commission members Nino Chkhobadze and Zaur Khalilov left the meeting. The president’s representative, Levan Shengelia, expressed solidarity with them.
“We were restricted in the timeline and decided not to adjourn the commission work. We all know that passing a law is a process, not a one-time act. Therefore, this process could not drag in time endlessly,” said the Chair of the Competition Commission, Zviad Gabisonia.
