Coalition for Change member Saba Skhvitaridze sentenced to two years in prison

Saba Skhvitaridze, a member of the opposition coalition Coalition for Change, has been sentenced to two years in prison. The ruling was delivered by the judge earlier this week.

Skhvitaridze was initially charged under the second part of Article 353 of the Criminal Code, which concerns assault on a police officer and carries a prison term of seven to eleven years. However, during the July 24 hearing, the charge was reclassified to Article 120, which pertains to intentional minor injury to health. The latter offense is punishable by a fine, corrective labor of up to six months, house arrest from six months to two years, or imprisonment for one to three years.

Law enforcement officers detained Saba Skhvitaridze on December 4.
