CEC Legal Head: Current law prohibits candidate removal from party lists before MP recognition

Giorgi Santuriani, Head of the Legal Department of the Central Election Commission (CEC), stated that current legislation does not allow for the cancellation of candidate registrations on party lists until the newly elected deputies are officially recognized.

He clarified that such cancellations cannot be made at the request of political parties or through individual applications.

“The law currently provides no mechanism for cancelling candidate registrations before the recognition of newly elected MPs’ powers. This applies to both party requests and individual applications, and the Election Code contains no relevant regulations,” Santuriani explained.

The Coalition for Change and Unity – National Movement has requested that the CEC refrain from registering members on their election lists and withhold temporary deputy mandates.
