Batumi City Court releases Art University dean and three students on bail, one student remains in custody

The Batumi City Court has replaced detention with GEL 5,000 bail for three students and the dean of the Art University, while one student remains in custody. The decision was made by Batumi City Court judge Levan Kolbaia at the previous court hearing.

The prosecutor requested the change of preventive measure at today’s hearing.

The preventive measure remained unchanged for one student, Anri Kakabadze, who remains in custody, as he had previously been released on bail for a crime of the same category. This was the judge’s argument for keeping him in detention.

For reference, the case concerns an incident at Batumi Art University, which resulted in the arrest of four students and faculty dean Mamuka Jorbenadze on criminal charges of group violence.

According to the investigation’s version, the accused committed violence against Irakli Devadze and his companion Irakli Nakashidze who came to the university on December 3. Some students and lecturers believed that the detained students were punished for their active participation in protests.
