Azerbaijani President says Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route expansion 'in interests of all nations'
The volume of cargo turnover between Georgia and Azerbaijan increased by 75 per cent, according to the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
During a joint press point with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Aliyev said, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway can be loaded with five million tonnes of goods, with further capital investments planned for next year.
“We intend to use this route to transport freight to Europe via the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, as well as to build new routes,” said Aliyev, adding that “it is in the interest of all nations to expand the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route and employ Georgian ports.”
In this context, Azerbaijani President said, “we should closely cooperate with Georgia as it should be a joint effort. Georgia is a friend, neighbour and partner country.”
Ilham Aliyev has arrived in Georgian capital Tbilisi this morning for a working visit.
After viewing the Heritage of Karabakh Khanate exhibition at Château Mukhrani, Mtskheta Municipality, Aliyev and PM Garibashvili have made press statements.
